Potty Training

In case you didn't know, trying to take "potty training" pictures for this post without making my two year old an underwear model was surprisingly difficult. ;) I decided to feature what has made potty training work for us instead: special gummies. They're actually just organic gummy bears but don't tell him that. ALSO full discloser: they don't typically hangout on our side table, because that would be a disaster. Their home is on our kitchen counter, but that's just not as pretty for a photo.

I had all these grand plans to read a few books and articles and go into potty training with a PLAN. But a few Mondays ago David woke up and didn't want a diaper so we just kinda went with it! Truthfully, I'm glad we did. I've had plenty of moments where I have no idea what I'm doing or how to do it, but he's doing amazing. I know there are mixed opinions on "rewards" (who knew even potty training was controversial) but using special gummies has worked so well for him and for us. Because I didn't go into it with a plan (i.e. expectations), I've instead just been following his lead and encouraging him how I can see that he needs it.

Originally our reward system went
pee-1 special gummy
poop-4 special gummies (this was Drex's doing, he said it once and then David remembered and it stuck).

Now if he asks after he goes, he gets one (regardless if it's pee or poo) but he's begun asking less and less which is awesome because I was definitely worried we were going to have to wean him down. He tells us when he needs to go and we scurry on to the bathroom. I honestly thought potty training would be WAY more difficult. He was definitely ready so I'm glad we just did it! The idea of doing it with a baby and a puppy was a lot scarier than it actually has been. Also, not dealing with as many diapers is fantastic. He does still wear a diaper for nap time and bedtime, I'm not sure when we'll eliminate those but I'm sure it'll happen eventually!
